(ENDE389) Wolf Head - Cupping Your Bootsies

Yeah right. Don't let the title fool you.

Fuckin Wolf Head. ENDE Records resident bush corer lulls us into a false sense of security with a title that implies a warm, chilled out, doofer's embrace before handing us a 6 track psychotropic nightmare.

Although "Cupping Your Bootsies" might just be Wolf Head's best release yet.

Opener "Love Cannibalism" is a swirling, schizophrenic noise dream about cannibal Armin Meiwes (who is hilariously still listed on Google as a Computer Repair Technician) and this melt of ambient noise, abstracted glitch and hinted dubstep/illbient is an introduction to what the EP has instore for the listener.

While everyone was content to accept straight down the line rave rhythms as the inevitable direction of breakcore (as warned by Christoph Fringeli in the documentary Notes On Breakcore). It seems no one considered the possibility of an industrial hardcore producer in Bellingen NSW Australia bringing a new take on breakcore which unashamedly mixed everything he listened to together with thick, honey like heapings of bassline.

I mean..they say you can catch more flies with honey. If that's true Wolf Head is willing to explore how fucked up and subversive he can make breakcore without coating it in distortion and overamped vocal samples. Preferring instead to pull back tempos and cohesion to create a more cinematic and varied approach to the genre.

In reality he's one of a growing movement of disllusioned amd mostly young, new school producers who have crept in under the fingernails of the impetuous "rave" arrogance driven by mostly by the more affluent and dominant elements of Europe and Australia in the worldwide breakcore scene.

Alongside groundbreaking producers like Krobatt, Erohypnos (who coined the term "Cinemacore") and fellow Australian producer "Crack Lips". The reality of these producers is the emergence of a new mindset, new direction and new attitude in breakcore for the third decade of the 21st century, driven by disillusionment and frustration at the old, unwelcoming guard dogs of the scene and a love of new styles that have emerged in the post-EDM electronic landscape. Something that was famously hinted at in a 2020 article by Sydney collective/label "Ultravirus".

"8R34KZ" actually threatens to be a hip hop/illbient nodder but then squelches and squirls the dynamics and tempo and wanders off somewhere else like a doofer on too much acid as Wolf Head's music tends to do.

There's probably an argument somewhere to whether or not this shit counts as breakcore but whatever it is I'm not listening and really...neither should you.

"Cupping Your Bootsies" is more of the sly grin and devilish style hopping that Wolf Head is quickly becoming known for. It's interesting, it's different, it's unique and it's far more interesting and engaging aurally than scrolling through hundreds of cookie cutter Soundcloud ravebots all clamoring to out amen each other.
