(ENDE306) Dark Matter Project - Part One: The Brutalist

Part One of Dark Matter Project's 2021 Album Trilogy...

Out of the smoke haze of the deepest South American jungle. Australian expat darkstep and junglist seer Dark Matter Project presents "The Brutalist"The first of a trilogy of sunless, slow moving, breakbeat/darkstep nightmares.

For those familiar with Dark Matter Project from his previous releases on ENDE Records and UK label Sunhole Records, you already know what to expect.

For those unfamiliar. This is primal, tribal, stripped back, minimal slow to mid tempo drum n bass and jungle. A take on darkstep which relies on hypnotic, rolled out breaks mastered and refined into kaiju monsters stalking their surroundings of swirling undertoned pads and basslines, avalanching and crawling like mudslides.

Produced in the villages and deepest jungles of Chile. "The Brutalist" is a late night sonnet to the very building blocks of the origins of jungle and drum n bass. It's original island birthrights. Peeled back and laid bare from the clutter of modern vocal loops and extraneous synthlines.

Opener "Nightfall" crackles to life after a few seconds of ominous pads with a smattering of static. Like a Frankenstein awakened by a jolt of electricity. Thunderous breaks take us into Dark Matter Project's native jungle.

The rest of the album is a slow drive through thick, distorted and fattened breaks and rhythms. To pick a highlight is difficult but a track like "It Came From The Sky" will certainly have jaws dropped.

Think of artists like Beat Rapist, Overcast, Christoph De Babalon, Abelcain, Syndicate or early Current Value but that's only a general reference to the unique sound that Dark Matter Project has been carefully crafting and sculpting for the past decade.
