about

(ENDE239) Hyperdriver - The Skull Still Means Nothing

Twenty years ago in September 1998, I was doing a lot of diverse music and was looking for a project name for my breakcore/gabber/noise etc. I recorded a track that I called Hyperdriver. It seemed to fit. I was considered too old to be doing that kind of music back then…now?...20 years older?...hahaha…nothing has changed. Fuck ‘em.

This “best of” collection is an attempt to mark the twenty-year anniversary by continuing on from “The Skull Means Nothing” album – so named because someone asked me what the skull on the first Hyperdriver album (This Distorted Life) meant. I wanted to keep it below 80 minutes so there are none of the 20 - 30 minute plus outings that have plagued listeners in recent years. Here are 13 tracks plus a bonus live track from March 2002.

To anyone who has ever done me a bad turn, slagged me off, or called me too old - I say, MWAHAHAHAHA – I’m still here.
To those who have helped, encouraged, listened, and endured, I give a big THANK YOU. You know who you are. Play this at your next party and piss of your friends :)

Love and peace,

Steve (age 58)

credits

released April 4, 2018

01 Fluffy Bunny Slippers (Just When You Thought It Was Safe - DTRASH RECORDS) A staple of my live sets for years. Still one of my favourites.

02 Satanic Rhumba (The Notorious Anarchy Of The Chainsaw Grind BEERGUT RECORDINGS) Another live favourite this one “bounces” along nicely.

03 Amen Again (Civil Disobedience – Split W/Negative Thought BEERGUT RECORDINGS) The Amen break. I haven’t used it a lot over the years and it seemed a shame not to include at least one track so that people could moan about it.

04 Dig It Out With A Stick (Naked Aggression DTRASH) The track with the video that was DEFINITELY NOT stolen by Muller for their ad campaign. Got that? DEFINITELY NOT.

05 Hardcore Psychopath (Dance Music For The Clinically Insane Part 2 : Ten Years On DTRASH) Analog synths and breaks. What’s not to like?

06 Moog Dreadbox Korg (Analog LEGS AKIMBO) All analog recording using Moog, Dreadbox and Korg synths. Every track on the album is live (in the studio). This track was described as “rocks in a tumble dryer”. I like that.

07 March Of The Undercanines (All You Need Is Chaos DTRASH) This started out as an ambient HyperEx Machina track. Really.

08 Troll (Noisy Distorted Bastard DTRASH) The only short track on the Noisy Distorted Bastard album so it chose itself. Still a goody though.

09 Pain Again Starts (Gargoyles And Grotesques DTRASH) The album used some psychoacoustic techniques and this track is a good example of this in action. One reviewer described it as “Heavy and disorienting”. Headphone listening recommended.

10 There’s No Glitches Like Show Glitches (Prime Lard ENDE) One of two tracks over 10 minutes I included on this collection. Take a shit load of Ketamine and you might be able to dance to this one.

11 Salty (Sweat ENDE). A banger with arpeggios from my “post gabber” album :)

12 The Wider Tapestry (Full Metal Jacket) (You Are Only Alive Because It Is Illegal To Shoot You DTRASH) In the Twitter age, album names need to be short and snappy. Yeah right. I just had to use the spoken sample on this track.

13 They Just Don’t Know (Audio Hooliganism BEERGUT RECORDINGS) The first album I did after “The Skull Means Nothing”. The first track where I incorporated my analog synths and didn’t exclusively use samples.

14 (More) Live At Sick And Twisted (Live At Sick And Twisted (And Other Stuff) BEERGUT RECORDINGS) Live at the wonderful and greatly missed Sick and Twisted, Upstairs at the Garage March 8th 2002
