(ENDE235) Catdog - Fucking Docile
US breakcore/IDM producer Catdog has been a fixture in the American breakcore scene for over 10 years now. First coming to ENDE's attention in 2015 and soon after releasing a SPLITENDE single with Noistruct.
We've been asking him for a release since basically that time and after his brilliant split album "Resisting Arrest" with ENDE regular Solypsis on Legs Akimbo last year, we stopped asking and started nagging.
But now in the label's twilight releases. We finally have a Catdog release of our own!
"Fucking Docile" is 5 tracks of progressive breakcore that acknowledges the style's past and looks to it's future - without wallowing in nostalgia. Expertly crafted jungle breakwork and fills, light smatterings of ragga cuts and hip hop loops driving pounding low end gabber kicks. All delivered minimally enough to let the breaks breathe and heavy and thick enough to make the gabber kicks land hard with intent. All while rave synth leads and precise chipnoises and glitch scratches, railslide along the rhythms with ease.
Catdog's love of classic 90s dancefloor hardcore is undeniable. He knows how to get the bounce to keep a crowd moving, while subversively throwing out well placed samples and hip hop cuts. The flow of tracks on the EP is seamless and draws you in quickly. Tempo changes are wielded just enough to keep your attention and never lose the direction of play.
Although a short EP only just breaking 15 minutes. It plays freely with structure, isn't afraid to break preconceived formula and provides enough head nodding and booty rocking to make it an essential consideration for any discerning breakcore lover- be they experimentalist or formulaic. Marrying modern dance music elements with old school abrasive hardcore and hip hop is something some producers struggle with but Catdog reads them both like braille.
"Fucking Docile" throws hands in the air, says what it wants to say, shows you what it does and then leaves the dancefloor. Leaving the listener either thirsting for more or forced to play the EP again.
wait...maybe that's his intent?
damn. That's dope.
