(AM3) AFTER MIDNIGHT 3 (Sets From The Livestreamed Podcast Festival)

THE HATERS (USA)
If you're a fan of extreme noise The Haters need no introduction. Founded in 1979 they are one of the earliest and most well known in the harsh/experimental noise scene. The group is primarily the work of the Hollywood, California-based media artist, writer, and filmmaker GX Jupitter-Larsen, accompanied by a constantly changing lineup of other "members," usually local experimental musicians and artists in whatever town in which a Haters performance happens to take place.

The Haters have released singles, EPs and albums with everyone and on every label (almost) for 42 years. Their prolific output is matched only by GX Jupitter-Larsen's boundless enthusiasm for the noise scene.

AFTER MIDNIGHT was extremely grateful to host a set by The Haters. A major influence on a few of us here at ENDE Records.

DUANE BUFORD (USA)
Duane Buford is a Chicago born and based multi-disciplined composer and musician. Best known as a keyboardist and programmer in industrial legends Ministry and The Revolting Cocks (Duane is the vocalist of the title track on Linger Ficken Good).
He has also worked as a studio engineer on countless records for bands like Chemlab and played in a number of bands in the 1980s and 1990s.

Beginning his career as a pianist, he swiftly moved into composing for commercials for some of the giants of the advertising world. His eight years spent with Ministry and Revolting Cocks produced 3 albums and three tours. The 1994 Ministry track “Bad Blood”, recorded for feature film “The Matrix”, was nominated for two Grammy awards, and in 2000, an on-screen performance of their track “What About Us?” featured in Steven Spielberg’s “Artificial Intelligence: A.I”.

Along with a solo EDM album planned for release soon, and his continued composing for video games, documentaries, television and feature films via his company Process, Inc.,

Duane was an admirer of ENDE Records for around 2 years having met Boris Otterdam online through social media. Boris asked him if he'd be interested in playing some of his original music at AFTER MIDNIGHT and he instead offered to do his first ever DJ set.

Recorded exclusively for ENDE Records in his home studio in Chicago. Duane enjoyed the experience so much that he plans to branch into further DJing sets throughout 2021 and 2022.

DEUTSCH NEPAL (Sweden)
Deutsch Nepal is a name synonymous with death industrial and dark ambient music. Beginning in 1991 after leaving the band Njurmännen.
Deutsch Nepal's sound has evolved further and further through his exploration of experimental sounds, deep natural rhythms and ethereal vocals.

Releases on labels such as Europa Cafe, Entartete Musikk, Staalplaat and the infamously influential Cold Meat Industry have made Deutsch Nepal one of the most recognised names in the darker coldwave industrial movement.

This his set for AFTER MIDNIGHT was his first set in almost 3 years. It was absolutely jaw dropping and we were beside ourselves with being fortunate enough to have him grace our podcast festival.

The show doubled as Boris Otterdam's Birthday as well so to have Deutsch Nepal perform with him on that day was something he'll never forget.

The set recorded exclusively for AFTER MIDNIGHT at ENDE Records featured performances of:

To the Earth
Heartbomb
Butterfly
Amygdala
Pasolini
How Low.. (2017 version)
A Silent Siege

CATDOG (USA)
US breakcore/hardcore producer Catdog has been a fixture in the US breakcore scene for over a decade now.
A staunchly antifascist old school break warrior and defender of social injustices. When not producing or spending time with his family he is often volunteering or organising for his community.

Catdog has had a slew of unapologetically politically charged releases out over the last 5 years in particular including the EP "Resisting Arrest" his debut for ENDE "Fucking Docile" and the brilliant "Escape From America"
Catdog knows that there's never a time when politics and the dancefloor don't mix because they're always one and the same. That being said he doesn't fuck around when it comes to old school rap sampled hardcore and frenetic jungle and breakbeat chaos. When he hits the stage the dancefloor fills quickly.

MANIFESTEVIL (Australia)
Manifestevil is a breakcore/IDM/glitchcore/hardcore/black noise producer and visual artist from Bankstown Sydney Australia.

Beginning in the early 2000s with live digital and analogue equipment and tracker software. His music is influenced heavily by horror, splatter films, monster movies and Hitchcockian suspense as well as black metal and the occult.
Many producers sample horror but Manifestevil wasn't just interested in taking sample grabs of famous horror villain quotes. It was the score and the sound work that intrigued him the most. Like a hardcore Argento. He learned to harness distorted breakbeats and noise by juxtaposing it against the impending dread and almost silences used to grip audiences in film. The way orchestras and strings and repetitive single piano notes were used to build suspense and then just as easily create heart pounding terror.

This restrained approach to creating tracks forces punters to not just listen to throwaway breakbeat and cut up samples. But rather short sound creations that have a particular aesthetic. There's as much Ennio Morricone, Goblin and Bernard Herrmann in his music, as there is Doormouse, Venetian Snares and Shizuo.

Aside from the mystique and craftsmanship of film score and suspense soundtracks. Manifestevil is also a great fan of the schlock and cheap splatter and effects of 70s, 80s and 90s horror films.
Live he would often stalk his equipment while wearing a blood splattered labcoat and homemade mask and brandishing a knife. This often delighted and intrigued Sydney warehouse punters who witnessed this. A great fan of the schlocky side of metal and punk like White Zombie and The Misfits he may also start throwing metal mashups and repeating shrieks and scream loops at punters who think they may have him figured out.

When not producing electronic music. He can also be found playing guitar in metal bands and creating black and white physical artwork or digital horror themed visual creations.

PRESSTERROR (Germany)
Pressterror is more than a speedcore, extratone "suizidcore" producer. He's a self promoting architect of his own scene and his own music subculture that he calls "drrrrr" named after the speed of the kicks.

Usually playing live in a pigmask and blood splattered hazard suit. Pressterror is renowned for a lot of things but mostly his gruesome stage show, overt enthusiasm and excitement for his own music and attacking hardcore crowds with it like a pigmasked escapee from a lunatic asylum manning a gatling gun loaded with kickdrums and driving in a stolen tank.

Pressterror has a couple of residencies including Toxic Sickness, Power Of Techno, Core Nation Germany, Ultrasonic Events Germany and Kurrupt Recordings UK.

Rumoured to play to anywhere up to 1000 plus people a show. His performances are legendary and once even caught the attention of Vice Magazine. Pressterror's ecstacy is your pain...unless you like extratone and "drrr" and can handle it at 1000bpm at 110db for 3 hours.

well let's test that theory...here's Pressterror's set which we left til early morning on the bill ;)

DJ BUTTBABY (USA)
US DJ, sometime producer, lover of the core and archivist of fucked up music. This was his first AFTER MIDNIGHT set which followed mixes he did for ENDE Records a few years ago.

Q24 (USA)
Once known as Greezus. Q24 is a breakcore producer, hardcore DJ and noise terrorist from the old definition. From a basement somewhere in middle AMerikka they wield analogue and digital weapons alike to create some incredible multi layered noisescapes and harsh, grating scores for a film that's too weird to make yet.

CRACK LIPS (Australia)
Crack Lips is a young breakcore producer from the Ultravirus crew in Sydney. His modern style of slick plunderphonic mashup breakcore had a few heads bobbing in the ENDE office on the day.

After a callout and gauntlet throwdown by a new breed of Sydney producers sick of the lacklustre party scene in Sydney in local print media. We contacted them to offer our support and after listening to a number of their releases. Invited Crack Lips to come and play with us. It turned out it was his first set!

archive.org/details/crack-lips-live-at-after-midnight-3

DJ SKEIN (Australia)
DJ Skein was another last minute drop in. Perth born breakcore and IDM producer who's style is inspired by the early 2000s warped noise and pop antimusic scene of producers like 7U?, Vvm and Jansky Noise.

He was keen to play a set and had a breakcore IDM set he'd been working on he wanted to show us. Late in the evening. His skills as a mixer were presented to the world. A highly skilled beat juggler for abstract rhythms and offtime bass and beats in the vein of DJ Arse n All and Misconceptian.

this is one you'll be flogging a few times.

SOUL SCIENTIST (USA)
Soul Scientist aka Ras Edward was a brilliant breakcore producer and DJ from the USA. Head honcho for Coma Recordz one of the biggest multi genre web labels in the US.

This is a set he recorded for AFTER MIDNIGHT 3 he also did one for AFTER MIDNIGHT 4 which sadly would be his last. As he passed away in October 2020. Much like DJ Skein the mixing skills on display are something to behold but the set presented here is of a much more rougher and harder old school vibe.
