CRIPPLING SELF DOUBT (USA)
Crippling Self Doubt. The musical equivalent of post-work termination malaise. The awkward silence on the phone after your girlfriend says "we need to talk". The worm in the tequila that doesn't get swallowed but slides around your gums tasting like a worm does taste. It's all alcoholic fun and laughter as your friends are smiling at your bravado to swallow the worm but then uncomfortable and painful for them to watch you screaming in disgust and desperately driving your fingers into your gums, trying to get it out of your cavities but instead squishing it into your mouth even further and leaving the slimy, cold taste of annelida seeping onto your tongue.

For almost a decade. Scott Dryman aka Crippling Self Doubt has channeled the awkward subversion of experimental noise and sifted the fun part of breakcore out until only the miserable droning silt is left in the bottom.

WESSIE PORKIE (Russia)
Wessie Porkie is the owner of the small and closed Moscow promo-group Radio Haplya. (www.facebook.com/RadioHaplya). He rarely plays like a DJ. More focused on promoting and creating concept gigs than writing tracks.

In 1997, he supervised a radio program about experimental forms of hardcore in Odessa. At about the same time, the first events were organized. Since 99, he moved to Moscow and joined the promo-groups GLAZ-PROSTOR (www.eyepro.ru) and Moscow Speedcore Scum (www.discogs.com/label/44543-Moscow-Speedcore- Scum). For the next 10 years, he was tightly stuck in the breakcore culture, on the background with IDM-Group (www.idm-group.ru) and a team of outcasts from Disco-Pigs.

At the end of 2000, he organized a separate promotional group Compound Splitter. Under this brand, he has created an infrastructure of non-commercial events dedicated to extreme electronic music. But here it was not so simple. A series of unconditionally cool underground parties and open-airs, from a financial point of view, was tied to drug trafficking. As an organizer, Wessie Porkie was soon taken over by the cops. For a while, he managed the organization of parties from the prison, but he managed to hold only one event.

Five years later, a new organization called Possee314 (www.facebook.com/groups/1736710283271703) was formed and has now been transformed into Radio Haplya and is dedicated to dynamic forms of experimental music

(AM1) After Midnight

AFTER MIDNIGHT was born in late April 2020, during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Resident DJs at Livestreaming Podcast Station “Digital Gabba Radio” were looking for a better way to get interest in the station instead of relying on weekly DJ sets and wanting to take advantage in the rise of popularity of livestreaming and the increased interest it was getting in the wake of Pandemic Lockdowns, which saw the live music scene worldwide practically put on pause.

Resident DJ Limbo (Sven Limbourg) came up with the idea of running an event style show with a series of acts on over the course of a night or night and day. This saw DJ Limbo organise the first “We are Gabbas” day long event at Digital Gabba Radio.

Other DJs were encouraged to do something similar so since Boris Otterdam was one of the resident breakcore DJs there, he decided to put on a breakcore event but with speedcore, experimental techno and noise as well.

The first AFTER MIDNIGHT broadcast on May 23rd 2020 was primarily a breakcore/hardcore/speedcore event, which saw Boris Otterdam ask a handful of producers and DJs he knew personally or had previously released or represented through his label ENDE Records to take part in.

With a lineup in place. Boris looked at many of the current livestreamed shows doing the rounds and found that many of them had issues which came from the DJs or artists needing to be seen and organisers relying on chat based streaming services (usually free ones) to film them playing live and have people see them spinning records or hunching over their laptops. These issues included drop outs, poor vision, poor camera placement and inferior sound for services not built for audio streaming over a long period of time.

Having already seen the high quality of the sound streaming from Digital Gabba Radio (DGradio) Boris knew that an event of livestreamed radio show style audio sets would be the way to go.

AFTER MIDNIGHT collects wav. audio sets from artists to play at the event. On the day the host (Boris) does a brief introduction for each artist/DJ and then plays a recording they made in their own time and to their own specifications and quality for the livestreaming event. This cuts down on connection issues when dealing with acts in different locations around the world and time differences with contacting them on the day.

Every act is pre-recorded and sent to the AFTER MIDNIGHT email. This allows the artist to have complete control over their sets by recording them in their own time in their own studios and if they need to change something they can and for Boris to arrange set times, calculate how much time is needed for the event and then archive the sets for the AFTER MIDNIGHT archive page.

It also insures the highest quality of streaming (since DGRAdio is an actual Podcast Station) and artists liked that they don’t have to worry about setting up their studio to have them and their performances be filmed.

Music is an aural medium and the quality of that sound reproduction should be first and foremost above the audience or artist’s need to be “seen playing” and should never be compromised with inferior chat based streaming websites.

AFTER MIDNIGHT 2 in June 2020. Saw a more diverse lineup of experimental and electronic artists, including some major headliners and was also....muuuuuch longer than the first (almost 20 hours in total).

During this event, Boris realised that this was a great opportunity for audiences to experience established experimental and electronic acts alongside smaller even bedroom based acts that ordinarily live would not have the opportunity to be on the same stage. With livestreamed events, there was no stage, no venue, no promoters other than the organiser and no middle men. There is only the station providing the medium to broadcast, the artists performing and the audience listening. With this in mind it became apparent that only the highest quality in original music producers and artists and highly skilled DJs could be accepted to AFTER MIDNIGHT, with none of the traditional elements of music events prevalent. The audience would be a lot more discerning and require something they actually wanted to sit and listen to rather than DJs playing favourites or “bangers” to appease drug induced dance crowds and dodgy rave promoters.

With this new mission statement. Boris decided to make AFTER MIDNIGHT an officially regular livestreamed event to showcase a range of experimental and electronic artists but predominantly the more heavy, visceral and abstract variety. Doom Noise and Death Industrial soundscapers alongside more melancholic IDM, crushing industrial hardcore, old school acid techno, abstract hip hop or minimal techno alongside power electronics and junglist breakbeat warriors.

The only rule Boris imposes is let the artists decide what they want to do. They can perform a live set of original material or they can DJ or they can put forward a completely new project they haven’t previously taken out and tried.

The end result is a smorgasbord of sounds over a day (or four) or so that anyone, anywhere around the world can tune in and enjoy all in succession just like a live music festival but without needing to spend any money, buy any tickets or go anywhere.

Those who have performed at AFTER MIDNIGHT so far include Khost, Tone Generator, Deutsch Nepal, The Haters, Dan Hekate, Mono No Aware, Pastel Boi, Noistruct, Hyperdriver, CARTHAGE, Null Hypothesis, Low Entropy, Istari Lasterfahrer, Ohmega Sir, Monad, Matt Bleak, Hellcreator, 3 Past 3, Laxenanchaos, Audio Cephlon, Dark Matter Project, Wessie Porkie, Megadoll, Krobatt, RVACB, Crippling Self Doubt, Zeuge, Divtech, DJ Tetsuo Punk Terror, Matt Bleak, Maraud, DJ Limbo, Safoh, RVACB, Warren Lucy, Erohypnos, Etdevagina, AR307, Midi Fister, Krobatt, Q24, Zeuge, Crack Lips, DJ Buttbaby, DJ Skein, Warren Lucy, and Neil LAR.
